Competition for urban interventions in the lots of Velluters

Purpose of the competition

The habitability of a district implies a quality of both constructions and its environment, its streets and squares, the space between buildings.
The presence of people walking the streets, children playing, people shopping or chatting, relaxing or working, are indicators of the vitality of urban space.
The streets of Velluters are the everyday landscape of everyday residents who live in it and project the past history of the district, the details of their current reality and begin to glimpse their future. But this, it is not too encouraging if we take account of the amount of voids in the urban scape, that confer the quarter an atmosphere of loneliness and the feeling of time stopped.
Some plots have been empty for over 25 years, and since most of the projects built are private developments, the district lacks public facilities and spaces such as squares, play areas and gardens. These all have to do with essential habitability.
Based on these observations emerged the opportunity to dump ideas in these vacant lots, now empty, which may be capable of being transformed through innovative uses for the everyday life of the urban population, so that they can be adopted and used temporarily for the people of the neighbourhood. These usable spaces, which are inactive for a time, are capable of hosting solutions to temporary problems latent in neighbourhoods and cities.

The objective of the competition is to make a research and give ideas for the temporary use of empty plots in the Velluters quarter.
These must be ideas that revitalize the neighbourhood in response to functional, social, and cultural needs, that incorporate environmental quality to its urban landscape.
In this sense a range of possibilities can be taken in account to propose interventions:

  • Proposals might address specific interventions or strategies for action and / or management.
  • The proposals may include different scales of intervention, involving a global intervention in the neighbourhood, or specific actions.
  • A proposal in one lot, several, or all. In a specific plot or in abstract and adaptable to different sites. Even travelling proposals.
  • Proposals with different time duration: from future scenarios to ephemeral actions.
  • Artistic activities, arts, audiovisual.

Any of these proposals may involve interaction with the neighbourhood.
