Competition for urban interventions in the lots of Velluters

Competition for urban interventions in the lots of the quarter of Velluters in València

"IMAGINA VELLUTERS" is an ideas competition organized by the Agrupació SOSTRE arquitectes per l’Habitabilitat Bàsica, la Cooperació i el Desenvolupament Sostenible , and by the Agrupació Arquitectes pel paisatge, in coordination with the Platform "Recuperem el Princesa, reviscolem el barri " .

In 1950, the quarter of Velluters in València, was still a quarter of workers; bustling, full of cinemas and shops, but from the second half of the twentieth century following a speculative spiral that left many abandoned buildings in the neighbourhood, some of them went through a prolonged state of ruin and later were demolished, resulting in a quarter full of vacant lots.

The objective of the contest is to make a research and give ideas for the temporary use of empty plots in the Velluters quarter.
These must be ideas that revitalize the neighbourhood in response to functional, social, and cultural needs, that incorporate environmental quality to its urban landscape.
-Proposals might address specific interventions or strategies for action and / or management in empty sites.
-The proposals may include different scales of intervention, involving a global intervention in the neighbourhood, or specific actions.
-A proposal in one lot, several, or all. In a specific plot or in abstract and adaptable to different sites. Even travelling proposals.
-Proposals with different time duration: from future scenarios to ephemeral actions.
-Artistic activities, arts, audiovisual.

The competition is open to everyone. All the proposals will be exhibited in the venues of the quarter of Velluters during 20 days. General public, through the website, will participate in the selection of the best works. Participants with the 10 best proposals will present publicliy their work to the neighbours and to the jury of the competition, who in turn, will decide the winner.

The competition has an award and two mentions. The registration is open until the 30 November 2010. The submission deadline is the 15 December 2010.
